What do our evaluations consist of

Baseball specific, with Coach Fallon having more than 25 years experience as a professional scout (Orioles, Reds, Phillies, Angels) we begin with evaluating the basic 5-tools.  During this process understand that we are always trying to find good fits for our baseball program but even more importantly, for our Family.  The culture of OUAZ and it's baseball program begins with recruiting and bringing in high character, athletic students with an "others First" mentality.  We look for guys with a mindset of helping their team win first.  We feel a weekend of coaching, evaluating and getting to know each camper on a more personal level, helps us to find "good fits"

With our analytic side of our evaluations, on the pitching side, we measure pitch metrics such as velocity, spin rate, spin axis, and movement (both horizontal and vertical). For hitters, we also measure exit velocity, launch angle, and spin rate on batted balls. Essentially, we will provide detailed data on both the pitcher's release and the ball's flight path, as well as the results of batted balls.

Here's a more detailed breakdown:

For Pitching:

  • Velocity: The speed of the pitch as it leaves the pitcher's hand.

  • Spin Rate: The number of revolutions per minute (RPM) the ball makes as it travels towards the plate.

  • Spin Axis: The direction the ball's spin is tilted, which influences the movement of the pitch.

  • Vertical Break: The amount of upward or downward movement the pitch has, often described as "rise" or "drop".

  • Horizontal Break: The amount of sideways movement a pitch has, like a slider or sinker.

  • Release Metrics: Trackman also measures release height, release side, and extension (how far the pitcher releases the ball from the rubber).

  • Approach Angles: The angle at which the pitch enters the strike zone (both vertical and horizontal).

For Hitting:

  • Exit Velocity: The speed of the baseball as it leaves the bat after contact.

  • Launch Angle: The vertical angle at which the ball leaves the bat.

  • Hit Spin Rate: The spin rate of the ball immediately after contact.

  • Contact Position: Where the ball makes contact with the bat.

We use this to analyze performance, identify areas for improvement, and make adjustments to players technique and strategy.
